A breast lift, medically known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to restore the natural shape, firmness and position of breasts that have lost their youthful appearance over time. Factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, aging, significant weight changes, or genetic predispositions can cause the breast tissue and skin to stretch, resulting in sagging. While the procedure is often referred to as a “breast tightening” surgery in everyday language, the accurate medical term is mastopexy. This operation focuses on repositioning and reshaping the breast tissue to achieve a naturally lifted, proportional and aesthetically pleasing contour.
During mastopexy, excess skin is removed, the breast mound is reshaped, and the nipple–areola complex is elevated to a more ideal and youthful position. For some patients, lifting alone is sufficient; however, in cases of volume loss, mastopexy can be combined with breast augmentation using implants or fat transfer to achieve fuller results.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
A breast lift may be suitable for individuals who experience:
- Sagging or downward-pointing breasts after breastfeeding
- Loss of breast volume following weight loss
- Naturally low-positioned breast tissue
- Difficulty choosing clothing due to breast shape
- A desire for a younger, firmer and more proportionate silhouette
How the Procedure Works
Before surgery, the surgeon evaluates breast structure, skin elasticity and nipple position. The most appropriate technique—periareolar, vertical, or anchor (inverted-T) mastopexy—is selected according to the patient’s anatomy and expectations. During the procedure, the surgeon removes excess skin, reshapes the underlying breast tissue, and repositions the nipple to achieve a balanced and long-lasting result. If needed, implants or fat transfer may be added to enhance volume.
Recovery Process
Mild swelling and discomfort during the initial days are normal. Most patients return to daily activities within 5–7 days. Surgical incisions gradually fade over time, becoming less noticeable. Full settling of the breast shape typically occurs within 2–3 months, resulting in a natural, lifted appearance.
